Conrad West Gallery walk-in traffic fell by 85 to 90 percent, according to owner Claire Conrad. The sharp drop in visitors has led several Las Vegas Arts District business owners to formally request emergency relief from the city.

Gary Conrad, Claire Conrad's husband, sent a letter to Councilwoman Olivia Diaz on Oct. 30 on behalf of multiple local businesses. The document outlines declining sales and revenue during the current construction project. The owners asked the city to consider four specific measures to help businesses survive the disruption.

The letter requests that the city allow 24-hour construction to speed up the project. It also asks for expanded free parking, temporary relief from certain city taxes and fees, and a designated city contact to assist businesses with construction-related issues.

Tina Spruell, who has owned Artistic Iron Works in the Arts District for 25 years, said the construction made it difficult for customers to access her shop. She said she had to use company reserves to keep operations running. Spruell noted that her company is 50 years old and this is the first time she has had to reinvest personal funds to stay afloat.

A city spokesperson provided a statement after being contacted by reporters. The city said it is considering extending construction work hours and featuring downtown businesses on its social media platforms. The city also stated it has provided alternative routes, subsidized employee parking, and free lunch parking to maintain access during the project.

The city expects to reopen access from Charleston Boulevard to southbound Commerce Street on Nov. 20. The entire storm drain project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027. Business owners hope for additional relief while the work continues to ensure their stores remain open until then.
