RC Lens took a 9-1 beating at home to Como on Wednesday, marking the largest margin of defeat for a French team in European competition history. The result ends a season of struggles for the Lens squad, which has now lost three straight matches on the continent.
The home side entered the fixture with heavy losses to Club Brugge, 3-0, and Sporting CP, 2-0. The new 9-1 scoreline against Como extends that losing streak and sets a new negative record for French clubs in this tournament.
Elsewhere in the Champions League, Real Madrid secured a 3-2 win over AEK Athens. Federico Valverde scored the winning goal in stoppage time to seal the result for the Spanish champions.
Liverpool dropped a 3-2 decision to Fenerbahçe, while Manchester City defeated Leipzig by the same 3-2 scoreline. In the Europa League, Rennes played Olympiacos to a 0-0 draw, keeping their unbeaten record in the competition intact.
Club news continued with Lyon confirming the departure of manager Paulo Fonseca. Jorge Maciel will temporarily replace him to lead the team against Real Sociedad on Thursday. In tennis, Arthur Fils advanced to the last 16 at the Rolex Paris Masters by beating Tomas Machac, 6-3, 7-6.
Fils will compete in the ATP Finals in Turin, unlike Novak Djokovic, who was eliminated by Rinky Hijikata. Alexander Zverev also exited the tournament after losing to Lorenzo Musetti in his first match as world number one.
