Residents looking to buy cryptocurrency in Clark County now have clearer guidance on what to ask before choosing a platform. A recent evaluation by Consumer Reports found that while buying crypto has become simpler, understanding the costs and risks remains difficult for many users.

The organization assessed five major exchanges: Binance.US, Coinbase, Crypto.com, Gemini, and Kraken. These platforms are among the most widely recognized names in the sector. The review focused on how clearly each company explains fees, security measures, and data practices to new users.

Consumer Reports noted that all five companies make the initial trading process straightforward. However, the group found that essential information is often buried or presented in confusing terms. Key details, such as how fees are calculated and what protections apply, were not always easy to find before a transaction occurred.

None of the five exchanges clearly disclosed during the sign-up process that cryptocurrency held on a platform does not carry the same federal protections as money in a bank. If an exchange fails or suffers a hack, users could lose some or all of their investment. Fraud warnings also differed across the platforms. Gemini required users to acknowledge multiple fraud risks. Binance.US, Coinbase, and Crypto.com used warnings that were easier to dismiss. Kraken showed no warning during the transfer process.

Privacy practices were another area of concern. The report stated that none of the exchanges limited the amount of user data they collected. Coinbase was the only platform that offered an in-app option for users to delete or request access to their personal data. All five companies had the opportunity to respond to the findings. Binance.US, Coinbase, Crypto.com, and Kraken pointed to existing security, privacy, and fraud-prevention tools. Gemini declined to comment on the record.

Consumer Reports recommends that users ask four specific questions before selecting an exchange. They should determine what they are actually paying, how the platform protects them from scams, what happens to their funds if the company fails, and how the company uses their data. For those seeking exposure to crypto without using a dedicated exchange, the report suggests considering a crypto ETF or index fund through a traditional brokerage. These investments come with stronger federal oversight and consumer protections.

The report urges consumers to look for information presented in plain English right before they confirm a transaction. It emphasizes that once crypto is transferred, it is often gone. The organization notes that scammers are targeting crypto users at high rates, making clear communication from exchanges essential.
