Residents of Clark County and other parts of the nation will spend less on holiday gifts this year, with the average planned expenditure falling to $880. This figure represents a 21% decrease from the previous year, when consumers expected to spend just over $1,100 on presents.

Kim Palmer, a personal finance expert with NerdWallet, attributed the decline to persistent inflation and rising prices across various consumer categories. She noted that the financial stress is pushing households to reduce spending in multiple areas, including travel, with many families choosing to stay closer to home during the break.

Palmer explained that the primary driver is a need to balance celebration with financial caution. She stated, "The really big underlying story is that people are stressed out financially because prices have been rising across so many consumer categories, and so people are really forced to think, OK, how can I cut back while still celebrating the season." She added that this mindset leads to lower overall spending.

To manage costs, Palmer advised shoppers to create lists early and spread purchases over several months rather than concentrating buying in December. She also warned against relying heavily on buy now, pay later services. Palmer said, "We found that people are turning to buy now, pay later, where you can spread out payments over several months. Of course, it’s a little bit risky because it’s a form of debt and you have to pay it back eventually, so that can be difficult once January hits."

The expert further recommended tracking specific items to wait for sales, as prices often dip as the holidays approach. Shoppers should avoid using emergency savings for gifts and resist impulse purchases, she said. The report reflects a widespread adjustment in consumer behavior driven by the current economic conditions.
