One person died and three others were hurt in a shooting at a youth football championship game in Madison, Illinois, on Sunday night. Authorities confirmed the incident occurred around 9:50 p.m. at Madison Senior High School.
The game was not part of the school's regular schedule, but the violence forced the district to close its doors. Four victims were treated in connection with the shooting. Three were transported to local hospitals for care. The fourth victim died at the scene.
The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis is leading the investigation. Lieutenant Andrew Pierson, the squad's public information officer, asked residents to share any details they may have observed. "Someone in that crowd saw something, recorded something, or has heard something since," Pierson said. "You do not have to have the whole story, a single photo, a short video, or one detail you think is insignificant may be exactly what moves this investigation forward."
The Madison School District canceled classes for Monday, November 2. Instruction is scheduled to resume on Wednesday, November 4. In a statement, the district said it is "deeply saddened by the shooting." It noted that while the game was not sponsored by the school, "this violence affects our entire school community."
Support services and counseling will be available for students and staff during the closure. Investigators are asking witnesses to call the command post at 618-709-7750. Tips can also be sent to CrimeStoppers at 866-371-8477.
