Ten pedestrians have died on Las Vegas Valley roads this month, the highest October toll on record.
Eight of those deaths happened after sunset, according to PedSafe Vegas and the UNLV Transportation Research Center. Officials attribute the pattern to shorter daylight as the season shifts. Daylight Saving Time begins this weekend.
Across 2026, 64 pedestrians have been killed countywide, a drop of 8 percent from the same point last year, the two research groups said.
LVMPD's Traffic Bureau Captain Jarvis Dudley urged drivers to slow down for people on foot this holiday season. "Metro can't do it by themselves. Henderson can't do it by themselves. The police department can't do it by ourselves. It takes every person to take time to think about other people," Dudley said. He added: "You slow down. You stop for the pedestrians."
The Metropolitan Police Department, Henderson police and other agencies are scheduled to meet Wednesday morning at Flamingo Road and University Center Drive for the launch of the #Dusk2Dawn campaign. PedSafe Vegas identifies Flamingo as the deadliest stretch of road for pedestrians over the past five years.
