Harry Reid International Airport broke ground on a new emergency response building on Tuesday.
The project replaces Station 13, the current aircraft rescue and firefighting post on the airfield. That station has operated for more than 40 years, making it one of the oldest facilities in the Clark County Fire Department. The new construction will be funded by $23.1 million in federal money.
Nevada’s congressional delegation attended the ceremony alongside airport officials. Sen. Jacky Rosen stated that the airport serves as a key economic driver for Southern Nevada by welcoming millions of visitors annually. She noted that the secured funding allows the airport to install modern equipment. Rosen said this ensures travelers who fly into or out of the airport remain safe.
The new building will measure 28,000 square feet. It is scheduled for completion in early 2028. The facility will contain nine apparatus bays, which is two more than the current station provides. It will also feature expanded training areas, private dorm rooms for staff, and updated paging and alert systems.
Officials said the new site will help the airport handle increasing air travel demand. James C. Chrisley, the Clark County director of aviation, explained that the airport supports a destination hosting major world events. Chrisley said that having modern safety infrastructure is fundamental to operating a world-class airport.
Billy Samuels, the Clark County fire chief, expressed gratitude to the Nevada congressional delegation and the county’s aviation department. He said the investment supports the safety and effectiveness of emergency response operations. Samuels stated the new facility will help firefighters stay prepared for every call with the necessary resources.
The groundbreaking marks the start of a major upgrade to the airport’s emergency services. The construction will proceed on the existing airfield site. The new station aims to maintain operational readiness and safety for passengers, employees, and daily operations.
