Federal agents arrested Thomas Markle Sr. Friday morning outside Tampa, Florida, charging him with possessing child sexual abuse material. The detention stems from a search of two storage units in the Los Angeles area where authorities recovered approximately 78 items, including slides, film negatives, and books.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli confirmed the seizure and the charge. He stated that the federal government will prosecute Markle to the fullest extent of the law.
The investigation traces back to a discovery in the Philippines. Thomas Markle Jr., Meghan's half-brother, reportedly found a large collection of suspected images while clearing his father's former home in Cebu City. Markle Jr. told The Sun that he reported the find to local police and the FBI. He said the collection contained hundreds, if not thousands, of images. According to an FBI affidavit, some of the images appear to depict Markle Sr. with children.
Markle Sr. has rented the Los Angeles storage units since 2008. The overseas discovery provided the lead that allowed federal agents to identify and search those specific U.S. locations.
Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, described herself as deeply distressed by the allegations. She noted that a letter containing troubling claims about her father was sent to London police in 2018. She said she was assured at the time that those allegations were being investigated. Meghan stated that her decision to limit contact with her father was to protect their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. Her representative had not issued a comment by Friday.
Markle Sr., a retired television lighting and photography director, suffered a stroke earlier this year in the Philippines, which required the amputation of his left leg. That medical event forced his return to the United States. He was expected to make his initial court appearance in Tampa on Friday afternoon. It was not immediately known if he had retained an attorney.
Markle Jr. said he supported and cared for his father for years, but that assistance has stopped. He said he will not speak to his father again unless he is called to provide evidence against him.
