Russell Brand faces a substantial prison sentence after a jury in London convicted him of raping one woman and sexually assaulting three others on Thursday. Judge Joel Bennathan stated that Brand will receive a significant term when he is formally sentenced on Monday, November 9.

The 51-year-old actor and comedian was taken into custody immediately after the verdicts were read in Southwark Crown Court. The judge denied Brand’s request for bail, which he had sought in order to see his children, citing the risk that he might flee the jurisdiction. Brand told his lawyers he was fine as he was led away, repeating the phrase “I’m good” several times.

The jury, composed of eight men and four women, deliberated for more than eight hours over two days. They found Brand guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault. He was acquitted of two other rape counts and one count of attempted indecent assault. Prosecutors argued that Brand acted as a calculating predator, using his fame and status to exploit women who were, in the words of prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones, a “disposable commodity.”

Brand admitted to a promiscuous lifestyle in his youth but testified that he had never forced anyone to act against their will. He described the legal process as consuming his entire life and impacting his family. His wife, Laura, served as a character witness, though Brand noted that no other colleagues with relevant evidence were willing to testify for the defense.

The convictions relate to incidents spanning from 1999 to 2009. The jury found him guilty of anally raping a fan at his home in 2009 after meeting her backstage at a comedy show. He was also convicted of sexually assaulting a woman during a birthday party at a London bar in 2004 and of kissing and groping another woman at a London radio station in 2004 or 2005. A final conviction involved a woman who alleged Brand pressed his face into her groin while recording an advertisement in 2009.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police stated that the conviction recognized the courage of the women who reported the offenses. Furphy added that Brand used his influence to exploit victims and that his sense of entitlement grew as his public profile increased. Police confirmed they have handed investigators their findings on two additional rape allegations to prosecutors.

Brand rose to prominence in the early 2000s through television and radio before moving to Florida in recent years. He built a large online following by discussing wellness and his religious devotion. The current case followed a 2023 investigation by The Times and Channel 4, which aired accusations from women alleging they had been sexually abused by the comedian.
