North Las Vegas is one of Nevada’s fastest-growing communities, a stat that shapes the expectations of its residents as they prepare for a new city leader.
The city will see a change in leadership after voters selected Daniele Monroe-Moreno as the next mayor.
Monroe-Moreno released a statement after her election victory. She described a vision focused on affordability and opportunity for the community.
“My vision for our city is bold, a place where working families, seniors, veterans and young people can afford to live, buy a home, and build their future,” Monroe-Moreno said. She added that the city should be a destination where residents work, live and play, not just a place where people survive.
Residents have mixed feelings about the transition. Kiara Williams, a longtime resident, said she is optimistic about the change. “I think a new face is definitely good to see and important to have,” Williams said. “Change is something that has to happen. Change can be good and I'm excited to see what's next.”
Williams pointed to the amount of construction occurring throughout North Las Vegas as a key issue. She said she notices construction everywhere but is not seeing corresponding progress. “That's something that I notice, a lot of construction everywhere and nobody's really seeing progress,” Williams said. “That's just something very important to me, especially since it affects my everyday life.”
Other residents want to see promises turn into action. Roger Newell said people say a lot of things, so he will watch for results. “You gotta find out because you, you don't know. People say a lot of things,” Newell said. He noted that creating meaningful change requires support from many people. “They've gotta have everybody that's behind them.. that's gonna cause the change and just one person is not gonna change,” Newell said.
