Nevada Senate Democrats have selected state Sen. Edgar Flores of Las Vegas to serve as majority leader for the 2027 legislative session. The caucus announced the decision on Thursday. Flores takes over the role from state Sen. Nicole Cannizzaro, who is the elected attorney general.
The leadership change follows Tuesday's midterm elections, in which Democrats won the governor's office and retained control of both legislative chambers. Aaron Ford, the outgoing Democratic attorney general, defeated Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo. Ford will become the state's first Black governor. This election result means Democrats will hold full control of state government for the first time since Steve Sisolak left office in January 2023.
Flores, who first won election to the Nevada Assembly in 2014 and to the Senate in 2022, is an attorney. He has focused his career on consumer protection, workers' rights, and immigration issues. In a statement, Flores said he is deeply honored by the trust his colleagues have placed in him to lead the caucus.
He stated that the state faces urgent challenges and that working-class Nevadans are counting on the caucus to deliver real solutions. Flores identified expanding access to affordable housing and healthcare, investing in public schools, and making the economy work for everyday people as his primary priorities. The caucus said its focus will include lowering the cost of living, strengthening worker protections, fully funding schools, and expanding economic opportunity statewide.
The Nevada Legislature convenes on Feb. 1 in Carson City. Flores said he looks forward to working with the Assembly and Gov.-elect Aaron Ford. The leadership team will spend the coming weeks organizing committees and setting the legislative agenda.
