Las Vegas State Senator Edgar Flores will serve as the Democratic majority leader in the Nevada Senate during the 2027 legislative session. The parliamentary group announced the appointment on Thursday, placing a longtime Las Vegas representative in charge of the chamber's agenda.
Flores replaces Sen. Nicole Cannizzaro, a Las Vegas Democrat who is the state's elected attorney general. Cannizzaro stepped down from the leadership role to take her new cabinet position. The selection follows the midterm elections held on Tuesday, in which Democrats won the governorship and kept their majorities in both houses of the legislature.
The Nevada Legislature convenes on Feb. 1 in Carson City. The party now holds full control of state government for the first time since Steve Sisolak left office in January 2023. That shift in power follows the victory of Aaron Ford, the outgoing Democratic attorney general, who defeated Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo. Ford will be the state's first Black governor.
Flores stated in a statement that he feels deeply honored by his colleagues' trust. He noted that the state faces urgent challenges and that working-class Nevadans expect real solutions from their leaders. His stated priorities include expanding access to affordable housing and healthcare, investing in public schools, and ensuring the economy benefits ordinary residents. He expressed interest in collaborating with the Assembly and the incoming governor.
The party group said its agenda will focus on lowering the cost of living, strengthening worker protections, fully funding schools, and expanding economic opportunities across the state. Flores, a lawyer by profession, has previously focused on consumer protection, labor rights, and immigration issues. He was first elected to the Nevada Assembly in 2014 and moved to the Senate in 2022.
The leadership team will spend the coming weeks organizing committee assignments and defining the specific legislative goals for the session. This process sets the framework for the bills the Democrats intend to introduce when lawmakers return to Carson City next year.
