A Gainesville woman says she paid more than $100 to drive 44 miles on Northern Virginia's express lanes this month.

The cost reflects the variable pricing model currently in place on Interstate 66 outside the Beltway. Tolls surged this week, reaching up to $30, $60, and $80 for the longest trips at peak times. The Virginia Department of Transportation implemented dynamic pricing to manage congestion and fund transit services along the corridor.

Karen, a News4 viewer, contacted reporters after hearing about the spike in costs. She uses the express lanes regularly to transport her husband to medical appointments in Fairfax. On one morning this month, her eastbound journey covered 22 miles and cost $74. One hour later, the return trip west cost $29. The total for the round trip was $103.

"This is our lived experience, and it’s really expensive, and it’s just money draining out," Karen said. She acknowledged that the lanes offer less traffic and more predictable travel times. However, she questioned the fairness of the pricing structure.

Her main frustration involves the inability to calculate the total trip cost before entering the lanes. Overhead signs display the cost for each individual segment, but drivers cannot easily sum these figures in real time. "You don’t know how much it’s going to cost you until you look at the billing later," she said. While an online tool allows users to estimate fares before driving, Karen noted that these prices can still fluctuate by the time the vehicle is on the road.

VDOT stated that higher tolls are designed to discourage drivers from using the express lanes during the most congested periods. This mechanism keeps traffic flowing for those who do enter the lanes. The agency also confirmed that a portion of the toll revenue supports public transit operations along the I-66 corridor.

Drivers can bypass the tolls entirely if their vehicle contains three or more people. For solo drivers or couples, the cost of convenience on I-66 has become a point of contention. Karen asked, "Is that really fair pricing? Is that what we agreed to when we went into this idea of having express lanes?" The department did not immediately respond to questions about how the algorithm adjusts for round-trip trips.
