Los Angeles police and paramedics responded to a shooting accident at Range LA on Saturday around 4 p.m.

Michael Mann, the 83-year-old director known for films such as “Heat” and “Collateral,” was undergoing target practice when the incident occurred. A weapon discharged while holstered, striking Mann in the leg. His representative stated that the injury was superficial. Mann received medical treatment at a local hospital and was released.

Mann has been a target shooter for decades. A person familiar with the circumstances described the wound as minor and subcutaneous. He was engaged in sanctioned shooting activities at the facility at the time of the accident.

The filmmaker is recognized for realistic depictions of gun violence, including the downtown Los Angeles shootout in “Heat.” In that scene, Robert De Niro and Val Kilmer’s crew exchanges gunfire with police. Mann is currently developing a sequel to that film. Production on the new project is expected to begin early next year.

His filmography also includes “Thief” (1981), “The Last of the Mohicans” (1992), “The Insider” (1999), “Ali” (2001), and “Ferrari” (2023). “The Insider” received seven Oscar nominations. Mann also served as an executive producer on the 1980s television series “Miami Vice.” He later directed the 2006 film adaptation of that series.
