The sports workforce in Las Vegas expanded from approximately 8,500 workers in 2015 to an estimated 18,816 in 2025. This data comes from an updated dashboard released by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The university announced the findings in a news release on Wednesday. Fitness and recreational sports centers represent the largest portion of these jobs.
Visitor numbers for sporting events reached nearly 2 million in 2025. Spending by these visitors generated an estimated $860 million in direct economic activity. This analysis relies on data from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority and was conducted by the Center for Business and Economic Research.
Andrew Woods, director of the Center for Business and Economic Research, noted that the sector extends beyond professional teams. He said the economy creates opportunities for local businesses and develops new industries. Woods also pointed to increased amateur athlete participation and youth sports involvement as key components of this growth.
Jay Vickers, UNLV associate athletics director for the Rebel Athletic Fund, focused on the potential for resident careers. He stated that the goal is to convert this growth into lasting jobs for Southern Nevada residents. For UNLV students, Vickers said this means access to paid internships, mentorship, and experiential learning. These opportunities span sports, hospitality, technology, and event operations.
Vickers cited specific programs to illustrate this connection between education and industry. He mentioned the Super Bowl internship program as one example. He also pointed to the partnership between UNLV and Sports Business Classroom at NBA Summer League. These initiatives aim to place students directly within the sports business environment.
