Vikings Defense: A Historic Pass Rush Surge
Minnesota ranks first in points allowed and allows only four passing touchdowns in 14 games, a pace that could shatter modern NFL records.

The Minnesota Vikings defense has limited opposing passers to just four touchdown throws over the last 14 games. That stretch dates back to November 16, 2025, and includes matchups against high-profile quarterbacks like Dak Prescott, Sam Darnold, Jayden Daniels, and Caleb Williams. The unit currently ranks first in the league in points allowed per game at 12.3 and second in yards allowed per game at 252.8.
The transformation began during joint practices in Berea, Ohio, in August 2024. Linebacker Blake Cashman said he struggled to understand the complex scheme deployed by defensive coordinator Brian Flores until he saw it executed live against the Cleveland Browns. Cashman noted that he needed real reps to witness the stress the defense places on opponents. Since then, the Vikings have increased their blitz frequency to generate constant pressure on the quarterback.
Safety Harrison Smith credited the staff for instilling a specific DNA into the group, describing the play style as violence paired with a thoughtful scheme. Flores stated that the team has run enough blitzes to understand where coverage gaps appear and how to fill them. This strategy allows the secondary to maintain confusion while the front line attacks. The result has been a unit that rarely concedes big plays.
The statistical output places the Vikings on a historic trajectory. Allowing only four passing touchdowns in 14 games projects to 4.9 for a full 17-game season. No team has allowed fewer than six passing touchdowns in a season since the league moved to a 16-game schedule in 1978. The current pace of three passing touchdowns allowed in the last six games equates to 8.5 for a full season, a mark not seen since 2009.
The Vikings face a difficult test on Sunday at Ford Field against the Detroit Lions. Quarterback Jared Goff is the only player who has thrown a touchdown pass against Minnesota in this 14-game span. Flores acknowledged that Goff is among the best quarterbacks in the league and that the Lions possess a strong skill group. The coach admitted the matchup is keeping him up at night.
If they survive Detroit, the schedule does not ease up. Minnesota will play the Buffalo Bills next, followed by the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers. Bills quarterback Josh Allen and 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy currently sit as the top two favorites on the MVP odds board. Head coach Kevin O'Connell said the team feels confident in their ability to win field position battles and limit turnovers, trusting the defense to perform over the full 60 minutes.
