Democratic Attorney General Aaron Ford defeated Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo to become Nevada's first Black governor. The Associated Press projected Ford's victory, which flips the governor's mansion back to Democratic control. This marks the second consecutive election cycle where Silver State voters rejected an incumbent governor. Lombardo had previously defeated Democratic Gov. Steve Sisolak in 2022.
Ford built his campaign on widespread economic anxiety. He framed the contest as a direct referendum on the "Lombardo-Trump economy." His team emphasized that federal spending cuts, tax policies, and import tariffs disproportionately squeezed working families. They argued these factors endangered Nevada's tourism-dependent workforce. Ford also targeted Lombardo over a state-federal agreement that eased approvals for data centers on public land.
Lombardo, a former Clark County sheriff, campaigned heavily on his law-and-order record. He attempted to maintain distance from national politics while embracing select federal proposals. For example, he supported exempting tips from taxes. However, he opposed several Trump administration tariffs and solar energy stances. Lombardo argued he should not be penalized for federal policies beyond his control.
Voters cited high rents, grocery bills, gas prices, and healthcare costs as primary drivers for their decision. These compounding pressures led them to back Ford. The result provides Democrats with a statewide victory ahead of the 2028 election cycle. Ford will succeed Lombardo as the state's chief executive.
