Former University of Hawaii head football coach June Jones died on Thursday at the age of 73, according to multiple sources.

Jones recorded 76 victories in nine seasons as the head coach at the university from 1999 through 2007. He moved to Southern Methodist University in 2008 and resigned from that position in 2014. His tenure in Honolulu included six bowl appearances and three seasons with at least 10 wins.

The 2007 season was his most notable, ending with a 12-0 regular season record and a berth in the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Jones also shared the National Coach of the Year award in 1999 after guiding the team to a 9-4 finish and a share of the Western Athletic Conference title. That squad completed the largest turnaround in NCAA history. His teams won WAC titles in both 1999 and 2007.

Jones developed a run-and-shoot offense that featured record-breaking quarterbacks, including Heisman Trophy finalist Colt Brennan. During his time at Hawaii, he coached five All-Americans, 52 all-conference performers, and 16 players who entered the NFL draft. Jones began his coaching career at the university as a graduate assistant in 1983. He also played quarterback for the school from 1973 to 1974.

After leaving the university, Jones spent three years coaching in the NFL. He served as the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Sea Dragons most recently. In 2016, he agreed to become the offensive coordinator at Kapolei High School.
