Residents of Clark County and the surrounding area can expect a return to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus on Saturday, Nov. 21, for a community-focused event. Hope Means Nevada, a local nonprofit, has scheduled its annual Hope in Action gathering from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The activity takes place at Valerie Pida Plaza and centers on youth mental health and suicide prevention.

The organization describes itself as the only state-level nonprofit dedicated solely to preventing teen suicide. It focuses on communication, peer connections, and accessible mental health resources. Organizers note that suicide continues to be a leading cause of death for youth ages 12 to 19 in Nevada. They cite national data showing that a young person dies by suicide roughly every 5.29 days in the United States.

The event is designed to connect teens, families, businesses, and local leaders. The day includes a 5K walk around the UNLV campus that features mental health conversation starters. Participants can also volunteer at two hands-on service stations and connect with various mental health organizations. The program includes live music, food, and family-friendly activities.

Several local and academic leaders are set to address the crowd. City of Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley will speak, along with UNLV President Chris Heavey. Dr. Shawn Gerstenberger, dean of UNLV’s School of Public Health, will also join them on stage. Long-time supporter Marc Orr is expected to share his perspective as well.

This year’s theme is “Action is the antidote.” Organizers say the theme reflects the positive impact that volunteering has on individuals and the community. The schedule for the day runs from morning until early afternoon, allowing attendees to move between the walk, the service stations, and the speaker sessions at their own pace.
