Jeffrey Mauck faces kidnapping charges after girl threatened with gun in Salem

A man accused of holding a gun to a girl in Salem, Indiana, now faces six charges and a $2 million bond after a chemical test showed a blood alcohol content of .292, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

Probable cause documents said Jeffrey Mauck, 53, approached a girl outside her home on Friday in an Amish community and asked whether her family sold eggs. The girl said no and walked away. Deputies said Mauck then grabbed her, threatened her with a gun, and told her to get into his car. The girl's family heard her screaming and came out of the home. Court documents said her father and his sons restrained Mauck until police arrived.

A responding officer reported finding a pair of black handcuffs on the ground beneath Mauck and smelling alcohol on him, according to court documents. Mauck told officers he had been drinking. He faces six counts, including attempted kidnapping and driving while intoxicated.

The sheriff's department called the incident "extremely disturbing" in a statement and said it was "thankful this young girl was able to get away and that her family acted quickly." The department also stated that anyone "who attempts to harm or abduct a child in Washington County" will face the "full force of law enforcement."

Mauck's sister, Anna Hall, disputed the account. "Just a huge misunderstanding of events," Hall said. "Everything that is being stated right now is very out of character for what me and my family know." Hall said her brother would not act aggressively, pointing to a tattoo of a blue bear: "He is, you know, just not aggressive." She added, "I do believe that it will be very hard to believe that that is what occurred when the truth comes out."

Mauck appeared in court Monday afternoon, where a judge set his bond at $2 million, full cash.
