State officials report lower than expected turnout, citing the absence of a federal race in this midterm cycle.

More than 730,000 Nevadans have cast ballots in the 2026 midterm election, according to state election officials. This figure represents roughly two-thirds of the state’s total expected voter turnout.
The total includes both early in-person votes and returned mail-in ballots. State data indicates that more than 443,000 mail ballots have already been submitted. Officials anticipate that another 300,000 to 400,000 ballots will be counted on election day, Tuesday.
Nevada State Secretary Cisco Aguilar estimates the final turnout will fall between 1 million and 1.1 million voters. That range corresponds to approximately 50% to 55% of Nevada’s registered voters. He noted that this midterm cycle is tracking behind the peaks seen in presidential years.
Aguilar said the current turnout is lower than what state leaders hoped for. He explained that Nevada likely sees a dip in participation because there is no federal statewide race on the ballot this year. “We want to see in that high 70s, low 80s turnout because then you truly get a sense of what Nevadans expect of their future government leaders,” Aguilar said.
With the mail ballot count already exceeding 443,000, the focus shifts to counting capacity. Aguilar stated that close margins are expected in several key contests, including the governor’s race and the mayoral races in Reno and Sparks. County clerks will closely scrutinize the early numbers as they process the remaining batches of ballots.
